Some early ESPN college predictions: tinyurl.com/26afdq [tinyurl.com/26afdq] including a WVU-Southern Cal championship game

I don't think any of those Big East teams will be as good in 2007-2008. Certainly none of them will play for the national title. I'm a firm believer in expectations mattering a lot in sports; a lot of teams are successful merely because expectations are low. Now that the Big East has "arrived," coaches are going to be studying tape a lot more closely. No one is going to overlook them.

I also think he's wrong about Colorado. They won't be that bad.

USC will be fantastic, but won't win a national title (Jarret gone hurts more than Booty getting older helps), and there is NO WAY Michigan loses to Zook and the Illini.

I'm not sure how things will shake out nationally, but I think you're right that the Big Easy will be down this year. WVU has to score because that junk D they run is good for turnovers but not for stopping anyone. Louisville and Rutgers lost alot, and Pitt's a year away from being decent, altho Wanny's players are finally in the lineup now, but they're all pups. Southern Fla? Who knows?

Pitt supposedly has a pretty dang good recruiting class coming in. They could be poised to dominate the Big East in 2008-2009. I'm still not convinced he's the kind of coach who can win 10 games in a season. Seems like they'll always have some big time letdowns.

Pitt has a big question mark at QB as well. They have all their tough games on the road this year so I would expect a 4-6 win season. But at least they will have a 1st draft pick in the NFL draft this year. That can't hurt.

Yah, I think 5 or 6 wins will be it this year. The team's still young, and the D's being rebuilt - which after last year is probably a good thing. I'm thinking Wanny will have another year before the heat's on. The one thing I notice about his coaching, or Rhoades maybe, is an unwillingness to get out of their base set with some blitzing and mixed coverages. I dunno if that's a coaching thing or if they didn't feel the players could handle a variety of schemes.

Well their problem for years has been the lack of succesful D-line and O-linemen. Better teams just push them around. Pitt can't run the ball or stop the run. Hopefully the guys Dave W is bringing will change that soon

The Lloyd Carr death watch has officially begun.

I'll say this for JoPa - he's an old school disciplinarian: post-gazette.com/pg/07246/814299-143.stm [post-gazette.com/pg/07246/814299-143.stm] He had his team help sweep up the Stadium as payback for the off season shenanigans they got into - and they'll push a broom for the rest of the season.

The Pat Bostick era may start sooner than expected at Pitt - the super frosh was headed towards a redshirt, but starting QB Bill Stull is out for 3-6 weeks after surgery. Wanny has thrown the job up for grabs.

How about the Appalachian State Mountaineers? They block two Michigan field goals in the last 1:37 and boot one of their own to win 34-32! The Irish surely miss Brady Quinn right about now, ouch. And that extra five yards on the kickoffs are going to be a big thing this year, from the early look of it. Bet a lot of first-teamers join the bomb squad.

7: Agreed. Harris' o-lines were always groomed to be passblockers, and he just didn't seem to have any interest in d-linemen. I guess he expected the linebackers and fullbacks to eat their way to tackle.

One of our members, ethanator1088, has a blog on SEC football. If you're into southern fried pigskin, give it a look: secfootballblogger.com [secfootballblogger.com]

Bet Tyrone Willingham looks a lot more competent to Notre Dame now. About that 10-year contract to Charlie Weis...it might get the AD axed with him.
Props to Florida Atlantic. And UCF. Looks like all those South, Central, Atlantic, International and whatever Florida's got some game. Recruiting in that state keeps getting a little more dismal for out-of-state programs.

Hey, Scottie, good to see ya. I remember when the Big Easy was supposed to become another MAC after the U, VT and BC bolted to the ACC. Hmmmm. Was that South Florida I just saw beat Auburn...at Auburn :o)
