And the pros think 30 carries is a big day!
Talk about endurance. Stephen Ford, a senior at Cambridge High in Ohio, recently carried the ball 65 times for 412 yards in a 41-35 victory against Dover.
Ford's carry total is the second-highest in U.S. high school football history. The record is 72 attempts by Russell Gunter of Straughn High (Ala.) in 1989. Pennsylvania's record for most rushing attempts in a game is 54 by Spring-Ford's Bobby Lewis in 1979.
- Pittsburgh Post Gazette high school football notes

SI's Top 25 High School teams The Hoover Buccaneers of Alabama heads the list.

Happy Birthday Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League - the WPIAL - 100 years old this year. WPIAL Century

As Dave Wannstedt says - "You go anywhere in the country on any NFL and college team, and you can talk Namath, Ditka, Montana, Marino, Fralic and Dorsett. That's all you have to say, and eventually someone says, 'Where are all those guys from?'

I second the Happy Birthday to the WPIAL. You can see the subjectivity evident in the high school rankings when you compare the SI list to USA Today's Super 25 where Hoover is 8th instead of 1st and De La Salle is 1st instead of 10th. Of course, USA today ranks Pittsburgh Central Catholic ahead of all other PA teams, but more locaclly, PA Football News ranks Woodland Hills above Central Catholic. They also rank Parkland ahead of Easton, but Easton was ranked higher in the District 11 playoff seeding. FWIW, Upper St. Clair is ranked ahead of either PCC or Woodland Hills in the WPIAL (District 7) seeding. All of this is before the Oct 27/28 games get taken into account. YMMV.

Update - Woodland Hills lost to Penn Hills 3-0 in OT last night (10/27). I guess they won't be ranked higher than PCC any more.

Another question - tacked on to the end since there isn't a post after mine yet - didn't LeSean McCoy play for Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg last year? If I actually read the USA Today blog post, I can see that he did, but now plays for Milford Academy, a prep school in New Berlin, NY with "more than 25 Division I-A players" on the roster!?!?

Woody Hills hung a loss on Central, Red. Glad u follow the ol' school, Ray - it's kinda a life style here for the old timers, going to the Friday nite games. Even with the mergers, a lotta players & communities still span generations in my neck of the woods. It's not unusual to spend a weekend watching the Central game on Friday, Pitt on Saturday, and the Stillers on Sunday. It sure beats stressing out on Iraq & the other news.

Maybe Ron should have called this thread "PA High School Football" since that is what he and I will probably be talking about here until December 16. I took a quick look at the scores, and I didn't see any surprises in the WPIAL 1st round. I think that Parkland will be playing for the East in Hershey on 12/16. I still think that North Penn (my homer pick) will come out of District 1, although Ridley has had a very stingy defense. Council Rock North has looked great against their Suburban One Continental Conference foes, but they never had much luck against National Conference teams from larger schools. Five of the last 10 PIAA AAAA football champions have been from Suburban One National Conference.

I'll leave it to Ron to pick the survivor from the West. There is a big District 3/6 game today between State College & Harrisburg, but I'm sure he will favor a WPIAL team.

WPIAL will be plenty wild, Red, there's a handful of teams capable of whupping up on one another, no real superteam this season. You're right, no upsets. But now it gets interesting - Upper St. Clair plays North Hills, Penn Hills plays Gateway, Woody Hills plays North Allegheny, and Central plays McKeesport, all heavyweight matches.

PIAA Class AAAA Top 10

1. Parkland
2. Easton
3. Woodland Hills
4. Harrisburg
5. Pittsburgh Central Catholic
6. Ridley
7. Upper St. Clair
8. North Penn
9. State College
10. Pennsbury

Easton may be No. 2 for now, but since they are sure to play the 100th Easton-Phillipsburg Thanksgiving Day game, they will probably be out of the PIAA playoffs 2 days later. After a quick look at the PIAA 2006 AAAA East Football Playoff bracket, it looks like Easton would be playing either Parkland or Bethelehem Liberty on Nov. 25.

And I notice that Council Rock North - 10-0, No. 1 seed in District 1, gets no respect from the top 10.

They may be higher now, Red - those standings were after week 8; the sports service that rates the state high schools is a subscription service, and i'm too cheap to pay, hehe. besides, the playoffs are the best rating system. too bad the colleges haven't figured that out yet.

I walked past North Penn's Crawford Stadium today (my son was playing a freshman game on the practice field). I may even get off my dead ass and go to the North Penn-Interboro game tomorrow night.

Central's probably rated too high, tho anyone can win the WPIAL. It's taking on McKeesport, a pretty fair team, this weekend. And thanks for the link.
